Most of the projects we write about here are small local business sites. This one's different. The Maryland Association of Social Services Boards (MASSB) Foundation supports local boards across all 23 Maryland counties, coordinates volunteers, runs an annual conference, and publishes a regular newsletter. Their old site was purely informational, a digital brochure. It couldn't do any of the actual coordination work the organization needed: restricted document sharing between board members, a place for organizers to communicate, or a real system for managing a newsletter archive scattered across years of PDFs.
They needed real internal tooling, not a redesign. Here's what that turned into.

Member portal and document library
The public site is only half of it. Behind a login, we built a member portal authenticated with Clerk and restricted to pre-approved accounts only. Organizers have their own permission level for uploading, categorizing, and managing board documents, all backed by Cloudflare D1 for the database and R2 for file storage. It's the kind of thing a template builder simply can't do, because it isn't a page, it's an application.
Live chat with AI weekly summaries
We also built a member chat directly into the portal, running on Cloudflare Pages Functions and D1. On top of that, we added an automated weekly recap of chat activity generated by Cloudflare Workers AI, so board members who miss a few days can catch up without scrolling back through everything.
Rebuilding 15 newsletter issues from scratch
The old newsletter section was an accordion buried on one page. We rebuilt it into one clean page per issue, using an editorial layout with proper bylines, section breaks, and photo grids. Then we went further: we located and processed 12 additional historical issues from source PDFs going back to January 2023, extracted the real article text, pulled usable photos directly out of the PDFs where they existed, and recovered the actual hyperlink destinations, registration forms, Zoom links, and grant applications, so every button in the historical archive links to something real instead of a placeholder.
Conference pages that actually work
We built a dedicated program page for their 2026 annual conference, with venue details, speaker photos, and calendar-add functionality. That last part sounds simple until you hit the real bug: Google Calendar's mobile app was rejecting the original .ics file because it was missing a required timezone block. We fixed the file and added a native "Add to Google Calendar" button alongside it.
Per-county board pages
We built out a "Get Involved" page with a dedicated modal for every one of the 23 county boards, each linked to its real Social Services Advisory Board resource, pulled directly from the client's own reference list.
SEO and AI search readiness
On top of the functional work, we ran a full SEO pass: Open Graph and Twitter Card tags, Organization/NGO structured data, a complete sitemap, and an llms.txt file so the site is readable by both search engines and AI answer engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Cloudflare Pages, Cloudflare Pages Functions, Cloudflare D1, Cloudflare R2, Cloudflare Workers AI, and Clerk for authentication. No WordPress, no page builder, nothing templated, just infrastructure built to match what a 23-county volunteer organization actually needed to run on.
